In the first section we are thrown into the conclusion of Chris' life. We first start out with the testimony of the last man to see him before he makes his way into the wilderness. We also read about how moose hunters find the decomposing body of McCandless. An autopsy later reveals he died from starvation, this is also indicated in his SOS letter attched to the side of the bus. In chapter 3 we learn about the temporary life Chris lived in Carthage, South Dakota. We then follow him to Mojave Desert where he ditches or burns the last of his remaining material posessions. Later in the chapter the parents realize Chris hasn't been seen in months and they have no idea where he could have disappeared to. Chris takes a canoe all the way to the pacific ocean and soon ends up back in Bullhead City, Arizona. Here he started another life of working in McDonald's, and the section ends with testimony of another man that he lived next to while here in Arizona.
